Hair Transplant or PRP
In the recent time, hair transplantation is usually performed in the multiple sessions or a single “mega-session” that ranges over a period of few weeks or months. In a mega-session generally, the entire procedure completes in a single session which may last for several hours. It involves the harvesting of hair follicles from a donor site or at the back of the patient’s scalp and then placing the harvested follicles in a recipient site on the scalp. As per the medical conditions and patient’s wishes, multiple sessions may be performed for hair transplantation.

After 3 to 6 months of hair transplantation, many transplanted follicles will start producing and thriving hair at a new site. But few transplanted follicles will fail to thrive in their new environment.

There, many trials and researches have been conducted to find a suitable way to promote survival of transplanted hair follicles and healing with minimal scarring after hair transplantation. Finally, a new PRP procedure referred as “platelet-rich plasma” comes in to play. Various literatures and studies already confirm the use of PRP in orthopedic surgery, sports medicine and dental surgery to promote tissue repair and wound healing after a surgical procedure or injury.

What is PRP?
PRP is actually a blood plasma containing a rich concentration of platelets many times greater than occurs normally in blood. PRP is immunologically neutral, usually extracted from the patient’s own body before a surgical procedure and used instead of blood taken from the blood bank for transfusion. Presently, this latest procedure is widely used for hair transplant through intradermal insertions of plasma into the scalp; with the aim of stimulating the scalp to support new hair growth.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a safe hair restoration procedure extensively performed at Mediclinic for the treatment of alopecia without any side effects. PRP is generally activated with the help of DNA activators (thrombin) and enriched with calcium ions. According to conditions, PRP can be used solely or coupled with any other hair restoration procedure.

Procedure of PRP

  • A blood sample (less than 50 ml) is collected from the patient
  • Blood is put into the centrifugation process to isolate Platelet-Rich Plasma ‘PRP’.
  • PRP is activated with the help of DNA activators (thrombin) and enriched calcium ions (calcium chloride).
  • Finally, activated PRP is injected into the scalp area suffering from hair loss in order to stimulate hair growth

PRP process can be used both as a solo treatment for maintenance and preservation of existing hairs or coupled with any DHI procedure for hair restoration, to allow partially transacted hair follicles to flourish. Therefore, PRP process not only helps to regenerate hair but also helps in faster healing of the dermis and epidermis area of the donor.

Advantages of PRP in Hair Transplant:

  • PRP is safe and without any contraindication.
  • It has a minimal down time and provides immediate results.
  • It enhances and accelerates the healing process in hair transplant.
  • It minimizes the chances of inflammation, trauma, and erythema (redness).
  • It also reduces the crust formation and discomfort to patients.
  • It hastens a noticeable per unit increase in the size of hair follicles.

The decision to use PRP is a patient’s personal decision and should be made after a proper consideration and consultation with a specialist doctor.

Conclusively, PRP procedure is best suited for those people who are not candidates for surgery or those people looking for a more aggressive nonsurgical treatment approach.

At Mediclinic, our specialists perform PRP therapy at the same day as the hair restoration surgery.
