Breast Reduction Surgery (Reduction Mammoplasty)
This procedure is performed to remove excess breast fat, glandular tissue and skin from the breasts to reduce and reshape the size of the breasts in proportion with the body and to relieve the discomforts associated with overly large breasts. It also helps to reduce the area of dark skin surrounding the nipple (areola). This procedure can be used along with liposuction. If most areas of the breasts have fatty tissues and there is no problem of excess skin, then only a liposuction may be enough for breast reduction.

Generally, Breast lift or Mastopexy is similar to a breast reduction surgery, except in some cases of breast reduction only skin is removed. A common problem encountered with large, heavy breasts is sagging or drooping breasts, which can be rectified with Breast lift.

Candidates of Breast Reduction
Sometimes, the excessive breast tissue weight can hamper a woman ability to lead an active life. Also, the large pendulous breasts may cause emotional as well as physical discomfort and pain.

A woman having following conditions can be a candidate for breast reduction surgery:

  • Physically and mentally healthy
  • Having realistic expectations
  • Never smoke
  • Bothered by feeling of having too large breasts
  • Breasts are limiting her physical activity
  • Back, neck and shoulder pain associated with the excess weight of breasts
  • Shoulder indentations from bra straps
  • Skin irritation beneath the breast crease

Steps Involved in Breast Reduction Procedure
Breast reduction surgery is usually performed in a hospital or surgical center, with general anesthesia. But for smaller breast reductions, the surgery can be done with local anesthesia also. This procedure may take at least 2 to 5 hours to complete and you may have to stay at least one night in the hospital.

Here are various steps involved:

  • This surgery can be performed in an outpatient facility with general anesthesia
  • A surgeon will make an incision around a nipple and downward on the breast just like a keyhole.
  • Extra skin, tissue, and fat from breasts are removed and reposition of a nipple is done.
  • Finally, all incisions are closed using sutures, skin adhesives or a surgical tape.

Once the surgery is over, the results of breast reduction can be seen immediately. A doctor may advise you to take some medications and wear a surgical bra for few days. Over the time, post-surgical swelling and incision lines will be recovered.

Time of Recovery
You will need to take rest for at least one week after breast reduction surgery. Sometimes, people may need two weeks to recover as per their health condition and situation. You should follow-up appointments as per the instructions from your doctor for removing bandages and stitches. Even after recovery, you may need to stop heavy physical activity for at least one month.
